We are so excited to announce that Ben Allaway will be our composer-in-residence for our 2009 season.
Ben Allaway’s compositions have been featured on programs with such diverse luminaries as Garrison Keillor, Maya Angelou, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Hillary Clinton, and Hal Holbrook. In over 40 commissions in the last decade, his eclectic body of work reflects a passion for cross-cultural experiences as well as for glorious traditions. Influences include his early life amid the colorful cultural palette of California, degrees from St. Olaf and Westminster Choir College, three years on the Mississippi (Hannibal), performances with Bernstein, Muti, Marriner, Menotti, Shaw, Abbado and Masur, and extensive travels in East Africa, Europe, Central America and the U.S.
Ben will be contributing to our concert in a variety of ways — performing, composing a commissioned piece, conducting, and teaching.
This upcoming season promises to be full of new stories, new people, new songs. For starters, our relief organization this year is LOCAL - it is right down the street on Transfer Road in St. Paul. Compatible Technology International practices the adage: “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime.” CTI doesn’t simply ship food across the world, but instead helps to build practical, easy-to-maintain tools so that people can spend less time/money/energy on crops, and more time going to school, or in other valuable ways. This is especially helpful for girls, who too often spend hours upon hours preparing food; hours that are not spent in school. We are honored to be partnering with CTI, and look forward to raising lots of money for them to continue their mission.
